The rituals and beliefs in various religions differ as follows:
(a) to bury or cremate,
(b) rebirth of soul or Day of Judgement,
(c) idol worship,
(d) punishment for sins of previous birth,
(e) the numbers game, and
(f) the 'halal' non-veg food.
To bury or cremate
The religious rituals depend on availability of natural resources, where the founder/prophet lived. Muslims and Christians bury their dead, because there was plenty of unproductive land available in Middle East. In Oriental countries, land was fertile with plenty of trees, thus Hindus and Sikhs cremate the dead and use land for agriculture.Buy online religious idols
Rebirth or Day of Judgement
Our life goes on smoothly, in spite of our beliefs: rebirth or the Day of Judgement. Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs believe in rebirth. Muslims and Christians believe in the Day of Judgement. We can't verify, the true or false status of these beliefs. There is no need to verify. It is a futile exercise.
Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs believe that the soul retains its identity, in all its rebirths, till God relieves it from the birth-death cycle. They believe that in death, only the physical body is dead, and the soul enters a new body.
Idol worship
Sanatan sect of Hindus believes in idol worship and Arya Samaj sect of Hindus does not believe in idol worship. Who is right? It is possible that both are right.
Talibans, the fundamentalist Muslims believe that by breaking idols they are doing a service to Islam and humanity. They believe that an inanimate idol is not a God and people who believe so, are mistaken. They destroyed a heritage site of Buddha idols -- sculpted in mountainous rocks of Afghanistan, a thousand years ago -- in twenty-first century. There was no need to demolish and hurt the sentiments of Buddhists. Koran says: Apprise others of truth, but don't enforce on them.
Why do devotees worship idols? Let's analyse. Within a family, when a relation dies, we display aphotograph in the house in his or her memory. Of course, we can remember the departed relation, even without a photograph, but a visual image helps us. Similarly an idol helps us to concentrate during prayers. It is easy to worship an image or an idol. It is not so easy to worship a formless God.
In the beginning, the idol was just an inanimate aide to worship God. Later, Hindus started treating the idol as God: (a) bathing it with milk and honey, and (b) symbolically offering food to the inanimate idol. It is illogical, yet it does not give any right to others to stop this tradition by force/violence. All religions have their own share of illogical beliefs and rituals.
Impact of sins of previous birth
Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs believe that if a person commits a sin, God punishes the person: either in present life or in next life after rebirth.
Why do we need this concept? Sometimes, we see an abnormal, newly born infant. We fail to understand: Why did God punish the newly born infant, who couldn't have committed a sin in present life? We have no answer, except to believe that God must have punished the infant for sins of previous birth.
Christians believe that God will save them, because Christ has already paid for their sins, in his crucifixion. This belief has added peace and harmony in the lives of Christians since times immemorial. It may sound illogical to others, but let Christians analyse the issue among themselves. Others should restrict their comments on the irrational beliefs of their own religions.
The numbers game
A missionary's goal is to convert, non-believers or believers of other religions, into his religion. The yardstick to measure a missionary's success is number of successful conversions done by him. Why we want to convert others into our religion? We believe: our religion, our family, our caste, our society, our language, and our culture are the best. This attitude is due to lack of understanding of life. We must try to understand other religions, their rituals, beliefs and if possible mythology too. It needs time and effort, but it's worth it. There are always multiple solutions, to solve a problem. The same logic applies to religions too. All religions are equally good and have a common goal: happiness of devotees.
There is a 'noble' greed in missionaries' mindset, that is to enhance the number of own religion's believers. It is a 'noble' greed, because it is a selfless activity by missionaries to enlighten and awaken the souls, who are not aware of the truth, as perceived by them.
There is more emphasis on increasing the number of believers and less emphasis to improve the ethics of existing believers. We wrongly believe that greatness of a religion is directly proportional to numbers of its followers.
